Between 1796 and 1903, during the reign of the Huraa dynasty, the first flag of the Maldives was a simple red field. Later, the flag was added with a black and white vertical stripe.
In 1926, the then Prime Minister Amir Abdul Majid Didi added a white crescent moon to the flag. In 1953, a green rectangle was added to the moon, and the white crescent itself was turned to the right as the country became a republic.
In 1965, the Maldives gained independence from Great Britain, and the black and white vertical stripe was removed from the flag.
